Project Do228

Hey everyone!

When we posted those screenshots of the gauges (”Details baby…”), Tristan from Soleluna Airways asked us, what those pictures actually show. Are those the modelled gauges for the VC? Or just photos of the real panel? I gave a short reply in form of a comment. Now André suggested to create a short post on this topic, so you guys know what we are actually working on at the moment and what our work looks like.

So, what is needed to create a gauge? First of all, we need pictures of it. As we don’t have our own Do228 (not yet…), we have to rely on our partners. We request a picture - the next day we usually have it. Nice service, that is. The pictures we usually get look like this one:

The “Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter - LGW” has been founded in 1980 by Bernd Walter with Dortmund as homebase. The Airline is currently operating five Do228-200 and one Do228-100. It’s destinatons are Berlin, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Hamburg, Köln, Leipzig/Halle, Nürnberg, Stuttgart und Westerland/Sylt. (http://www.lgw.de, June 19th, 2007)

In hope of new, interesting Dornier pictures, I search the internet at least once a month. The photos I usually find show planes of LGW, Arcus Air, Vision Air, Kato Air etc. But they are far not as fascinating as a rare picture of a DANA Avition (Nigeria) aircraft or a stored prototype.

So, this time, I tried to find the whole fleet of Dornier’s 228 demonstrator aircraft. Airliners.net, Myaviation.net and Dornier228.de helped me a lot. I found several Do228 in “house” liveries. Three of them are Do-228-2XX. Number one shows the prototype of the Do-228-200. It’s the D-ICDO (s/n 4359). This version is a little bit different from the -202 and -212 that we are working on. I decided to paint it anyway. I hope you like the result.

If you are interested in background information on the Do228, we highly recommend you to visit the Dornier 228 Information Center. There you will find a detailed aircraft history, a describtion of the Dornier technology, a production list and much more. Definately a great website on this topic.

The idea of “project Do228″ was already alive in January 2004. Back then, we had the vision to create a highly realistic simulation of the Dornier 228 aircraft, based on Microsoft’s Flightsim 2004. Working together with OSS, we soon found the people to form a team.
In April 2004 we went to Nordholz Air Base in northern Germany to meet Markus,  active Do228 Pic, flying for the German Navy and Frank, technical engineer, also working for the German Navy. The meeting was successful, several GB of photos and videos were taken and we were very well provided with all the information that was needed to finally get the modelling started.
After a few months, first screenshots of the model and the panel appeared in the OSS forum, showing two models, the Do228-200 and the shortened version, the Do228-100. In 2005, finally the paintkit was finished and we started to create the first liveries.
Unfortunately, since then there have been many problems with the team and OSS. So, in September 2006, when OSS went offline, we decided to finish the project on our own.

So finally we are online. In the next months we will try to keep this blog running. As soon as the developement is finished, we will present you a complete website. Stay tuned!
